Life on All Fours starts with a puppy pile. We see the world through the eyes of Beau, a field spaniel puppy who is enjoying a few blissful weeks of togetherness with his siblings before the woman who has bred him, Joanne, sends him off to a man called Ben Walker in San Francisco. Beau is wise and curious, always on the hunt for food and smells, vulnerable and resilient at the same time. Ben's life becomes infinitely larger with this wonderful pup in his life.But LOAF isn't at bottom a sentimental tale at all. Ben, who is HIV-positive and fearful of getting involved with new partners, is going through his own journey, his own transition, and the longtime friends around him all must participate and bear witness to his choices. Life on All Fours turns out to be a beautiful novel about life and death, about chosen family, and about the way love opens us to new perspectives even as our lives are infinitely fragile.
As a member of Frederickson's writing group, I witnessed Life on All Fours go from early drafts to the wonderfully full and fleshed out novel it is now.

Thoroughly enjoyed this story! The author seemed to climb behind the eyes of the lovable pooch protagonist. Serious subject matter covered in a unique & sympathetic way. I highly recommend this book, it's had me looking at my own doggy a little differently... I wonder what he's thinking?
I was touched, moved and inspired by this sweet and powerful story! I laughed at Beau's antics and unique perspective. I teared-up at how life can be so unfair and how Ben moved through it all with such grace and authenticity. There are lessons here for all of us but the author never gets preachy. Beautifully done!

Through the eyes of a canine companion, we visit upon the very real lives of a few close friends who deal with life as it comes to us, not how we would have it be. Ben and his adorable puppy, Beau, along with his family of friends remind us that life is full of surprises, challenges, forgiveness - and above all, love.
David paints a vivid picture of his characters that as a reader you knew and understood each and every one of them. I could see, smell, and hear my way through this intertwined story of love, life, relationships, family and HIV. It is a well-written novel that is relatable, honest, and heart-warming.
