Become a fly on the wall of a psychologist's and her patients' inner sanctum and end up learning about yourself! Did you ever wonder what goes on in a psychologist's office? How does she keep secrets? Is she ever bored, unsure, afraid, angry or impatient? Does she confuse one person's story with another or get too emotionally involved? What does she actually do to facilitate change besides saying, What do you mean by that? Conversations with Perfect Strangers Memoirs of a Psychologist is a fictionalized* journey through one psychologist's practice and into the hearts and minds of the 'perfect' strangers who, by sharing their secrets, enrich and inform her life. About her forty years in practice, Phyliss Shanken says ""I shelter the memory of my patients' struggles in a special place deep within my heart. I celebrate their triumphs. I am changed because of them."" Sit in on heartwarming, enlightening, sometimes funny and sometimes scary sessions with strangers you come to know well. Answer questions the psychologist directly asks you so you can learn about your own issues. Become better able to listen and solve problems, use laughter to muddle through life's crises, and develop into a more effective spouse, parent, worker or friend. This book is for those who wonder what their therapists are really thinking, for healthcare professionals, and for anyone interested in the troubled side of human nature or who desire a unique opportunity for personal growth. * Due to confidentiality considerations, Phyliss Shanken intertwined her skills as psychologist and fiction writer The patients are imaginary characters, but her own reactions are true to her personal and professional experience.

I just finished this book written by Phyliss Shanken and I highly recommend it. It is very clear to me that her years of experience as a therapist is reflected in this book. She also has the unique quality of pulling you into the book as a listener during her sessions. If you feel you need to speak with a therapist, you have to read this book because she shows us how uniquely one can understand the core of a patient's mind and help them through their personal traumas or addictions. Her stories are fictional because of her strong sense of privacy which needs to be respected but they are so real because of her experiences of being a therapist for many years. I certainly learned something about my self as well while I was "spying" in her sessions with her patients. Read this book and you will learn that seeking help from a therapist can be a life changing experience. Thank you Phyliss for showing us it is not scary to open up your soul to a stranger, especially when you have a well qualified person to speak to like you.

Conversations with Perfect Strangers Phyliss Shanken 9781625103253 Books Reviews

This book had so many facets learning about what goes on in a therapist's office, stories of people who have problems and want to make changes in their lives, and it also had helpful ideas on how the reader could make personal growth changes. The best part for me was reading the stories of the various fictitious patients that Phyliss Shanken provided. I was so enthralled and involved that I wanted to step in and ask the person questions myself. The book also gave me an idea of why people might go into therapy and that the psychologist doesn't really tell the person what to do but helps that person gain understanding and then makes his or her own decisions. I also liked that Phyliss Shanken shared some of her own emotions about the people with whom she worked but also about her personal reactions and idiosyncrasies. We don't always get to know the secrets of the people who go to therapists but we never learn about the therapist herself. This was a unique book and I'm so glad I read it. I feel a little smarter, a little lighter and even a little happier in my own life. That's pretty good for just one book!
If you have ever wondered what goes on inside a therapy room, Conversations with Perfect Strangers is the book for you. Phyliss Shanken provides her reader with a poignant adventure into the richness of the therapeutic relationship. In a comfortable conversational style, the author draws you into the intricate stories of her fictional patients. What makes this book so unique is the willingness of the author to share her own internal process as she provides treatment for her clients. Her honesty, integrity, insight, and feelings are palpable and engaging.
A marvelous read for anyone interested in the internal workings of relationships. I highly recommend this novel to any therapist, experienced or novice, as training or a supervision tool."
This book needs to be required reading for every Psych 101 student. Ms. Shanken has hit a homerun when it comes to understanding the real reasons her clients come back to visit her again and again. More importantly is her description of trigger mechanisms that bring forth to her conscious mind, important realizations about her clients motivations.
In "Conversations with Perfect Strangers", Phyliss Shanken provides a unique and realistic glimpse into the world of psychotherapy, informative for therapists and clients alike. At a time when psychotherapy is frequently dramatized or the focus of comedy, Shanken's portrayal is a counterpoint. She highlights in an honest manner the challenges, joys, pain, breakthroughs and humor that permeate the therapeutic process. Particularly informative are the examples of the use of humor in therapy, the chapter on first encounters, and her presentation of the ethics of "keeping secrets". Shanken has turned decades of experience into a gift that demystifies the therapist and psychotherapy, hopefully encouraging the use of this effective resource.
As a Licensed Professional Counselor. I relate to the stories that Phyllis tells. A counselor can go on an emotional roller coaster on any day at the office. I would recommend this book to anyone in the counseling profession. I think it is a great read for any high school or college student considering the counseling profession. It gives you a realistic trip into the world of counseling and it could help you make a decision if you want to go in the field.
Start reading Conversations With Perfect Strangers and get ready to hold on, as a whirlwind of characters are presented with rapidly moving interwoven stories. This is “zero to sixty” right from the beginning. Every line leads to insights and adages harvested from the years of experience and passionate dedication for the wellbeing of her clients. Throughout, Phyliss shares both a persistent sense of humor and a profound compassion for those who are suffering, making this a must read for all current and future psychologists, counselors, and human service workers. Indeed, these memoirs come alive as the author conveys the personal struggles, common challenges and essential bridge building processes or techniques for getting to a better place of personal being. What a smile this book brings to the reader and the value it adds to the profession!
